Four Processes - Addition

Australian Curriculum

Level - Foundation & Year One
 
After lots of homework, research and creating, we are very pleased to be able to add (no pun intended!) a Four Processes - Addition unit to our collection.

As students explore addition, this unit aims to combine the sequence of learning required to develop the addition concept, while meeting the requirements of AusVELS.

Both the sequence for developing the addition concept and AusVELS are combined to provide a thorough approach to the teaching of addition. Included are a range of effective teaching strategies (adapted from Teaching Primary Mathematics, Booker et al, Pearson, 2010) accompanied by iSURF resources to support their implementation.
 
This unit includes:
• On overview of the concepts and strategies relevant to the development of addition
• Key teaching points & strategies
• A Student Progress Record sheet
• Tasks to support the teaching of addition
• Resources to support the teaching of addition
• Identified assessment tasks to support a differentiated teaching approach

• Vertical Ten Frames (laminate for long term use)
• Stories to support use of Vertical Ten Frames
• Vertical Ten Frames – written addition (laminate , cut in half and use whiteboard markers)

• Partitioning & Rearranging Parts
• Addition Basic Facts

Sunday Night Games

Keeping with our addition theme,
here is a "Make Ten!" card game to try...
 
Make Ten!
Use a standard deck of cards - remove all Kings, Queens and Jacks from the deck (leave the Jokers in)
  • Students sit opposite a partner and place 8 cards (face up) in a straight line between them
  • All other cards are dealt out to the two players (face down)
  • Dealer goes first
  • Students turn over the top card from their pile and then look at the cards face up in the middle. If they can combine their card with one from the middle to 'Make Ten' - then they keep that pair. They then replace the missing card from the middle with one from their deck.
  • If a Joker is turned over - it can be used to match any card in the middle - but the pair can only be taken if the student can correctly identify what number would Make Ten
  • The first person to get rid of all their cards is the winner!

It is all ADDING up!

Welcome to the beginning of our exploration of ADDITION!
Addition is an interesting concept that students often come to school having a basic grasp of...
"If I have 4 toys and I get 2 more, I will have 6." (Which is definitely better than 4!)
 
Addition has several key understandings that are essential to ensure students are equipped to move to more complex problem solving later on.
 
One example of this is the introduction of vertical recording from the start.
Students begin learning about addition by exploring addition stories and using familiar, concrete  materials.
Ten Frames are a great way to introduce addition - students are able to make connections between place value and using parts to make a whole.
Using Ten Frames vertically will help students make the connection to written addition problems at a later stage.

We are currently compiling an addition resource for teachers - based on both the sequence of developing the concept of addition (Booker et al, 2010) and AusVELS.
This will be released in stages - keep your eyes out for this soon!

Sunday Night game ideas



This site has some great games that engage our students and get them thinking before they realise that they are learning. 

It is also a free site that you can access at school or home. 

We have been looking at fractions and this site has given some children the extra practise they needed and they are sharing their new learning. There is the opportunity to practise and learn by lessons and it is clear when navigating your way around the site.

We often talk about 'best fit' and this allows our students to have a go and then choose a path.

-          Decide what tasks you will use to assess each elaboration. This will show what the student had achieved within each of the Content Descriptions
-          The information you collect can be used to assist in individual goal setting and planning for focus teaching of individuals or groups
-          Use the appropriate level for each student. If the student is above the level they need to be accessing the level that is appropriate for them
-          This may mean that you have multiple levels within the one grade
-          The positive outcome is that each student will be challenged appropriately

Sunday Night Game

Ticket Out The Door

 
'Ticket Out The Door' is a great way to reinforce any mathematical concept being taught...
Students must answer a mathematical question before being allowed 'out the door' for recess or lunch.
Questions can be number related. For example - times tables, friends of 10 or any of the four processes.
Questions can also be related to other mathematical areas such as measurement, geometry, probability, etc. For example...
  • How many centimetres in 5.5 metres?
  • I am a 3 dimensional object and have 6 faces - what could I be?
  • What are my chances of rolling a 3 on a 10 sided dice?
  • How many grams in a kilogram?
  • Tell me one different way could I measure the basketball court?
  • If I flip a coin 10 times, what would you expect to happen?
Questions can be adjusted to suit individual students and the "ticket" can be a high five as they successfully answer the question and head out the door!
